Joseph Wright von Derby war der erste große britische Maler, der fast ganz außerhalb von London arbeitet. Die meisten seiner Patronen waren Händler oder Industrielle aus den Midlands oder Mitglieder der lokalen Gentry. Dieses Porträt einer unbekannten Dame wurde wahrscheinlich um 1770 gemalt, der Höhepunkt der frühen Karriere von Wright als Porträtist, und ist ein schönes Beispiel für den direkten, beschreibenden Stil, den er beschäftigte – weit entfernt von den künstlichen Konventionen in der Londoner Gesellschaft.
