Die Girandola war ein Feuerwerk in Rom, jedes Jahr am Ostermontag, und bei der Einweihung eines neuen Papstes. Wright war 1774-1775 in Rom und hätte einige dieser Gelegenheiten erlebt. Girandole bedeutet das Drehrad, aus dem die Raketen gefeuert wurden. Wrights Blick auf Rom ist ein Capriccio der wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten des Tages. Es umfasst das Castel Sant’Angelo, die Spalte Trajan, das Pantheon und den Petersdom mit dem Vatikan. Der entfernte Standpunkt ist eine Erfindung, die es dem Künstler ermöglicht, zwei kolossale Steinstifte einzuschließen. Er konzipierte das Thema als Paar zu seinem Gemälde
