La babysitter proveniva da una famiglia di proprietari terrieri del Lancashire con sede intorno a Southport che aveva interessi mercantili a Liverpool. È visto qui in costume da caccia, con la sua pistola e corno di polvere. Posizionato molto vicino al piano dell'immagine, fortemente illuminato e meticolosamente osservato, la figura ha una presenza vivida. Wright lavorò come ritrattista a Liverpool tra il 1768 e il 1771. La sua presenza in questa città commerciale in rapida espansione ha avuto un enorme impatto sugli artisti locali, e i ritratti che ha prodotto in quel tempo sono come esempi classici di valori artistici provinciali che si fondono con il gusto mercantile fiorente.
