All'inizio della sua carriera, Jozef Israëls ha mostrato un chiaro impegno per il genere alla moda della pittura di storia. La sua scelta di formazione, insegnanti ed entusiasmo lo indicano tutti. Nel 1855 cambiò direzione, dopo le visite a Düsseldorf, Oosterbeek, Parigi e Barbizon. Nel 1900 scrisse:
