Juan de Arellano fue considerado el preeminente pintor de flores en España del siglo XVII. Estudió y fue influenciado por las pinturas de flores del pintor romano, Mario Nuzzi (1603-1673), y los artistas flamencos anteriores, Jan Brueghel el Viejo (1568-1625) y Daniel Seghers (1590-1661). Mientras que inicialmente pintó escenas principalmente religiosas, según uno de sus colegas, de Arellano decidió cambiar su enfoque exclusivamente a pinturas florales, porque podría recibir más pagado por menos trabajo. Era muy consciente de la naturaleza decorativa de este género y del gusto contemporáneo para mostrarlos.
