Van Gogh creò una serie di dipinti di girasole nel 1888. Egli li creò come decorazioni per la Casa Gialla in Arles in cui l'ospite di Van Gogh, Paul Gaugin sarebbe rimasto, Purtroppo, a causa di una caduta-out con Gaugin, dopo di che Van Gogh ha tagliato il suo proprio lobo auricolare in un panico paranoico, Van Gogh non è mai stato in grado di decorare la sua casa gialla. Inviò invece i dipinti alla mostra, immaginando i due dipinti di girasole uno dei due lati del suo dipinto di Berceuse, e chiamandolo Triptych Berceuse, esponendo i dipinti alla mostra Les XX di Parigi. In seguito mostrò tutti e tre i dipinti insieme alla suddetta mostra nel 1890.
