Un pintor-etcher que estaba profundamente interesado en un enfoque naturalista de la pintura y el trabajo gráfico, Bastien-Lepage representaba frecuentemente escenas de la vida cotidiana en el campo. Estaba íntimamente familiarizado con esas escenas, mientras crecía en una granja. Además de crear retratos naturalistas, el artista grabó a campesinos rurales en los campos en la tradición de los realistas Gustave Courbet y Jean-François Millet.
