El horizonte bajo y el cielo ampliamente pintado en esta imagen testimonian el interés de Dupré por el arte inglés reciente, especialmente los paisajes de John Constable y el tardío Richard Parkes Bonington. Esta obra se ajusta a la descripción de una "expansiva y verdadera composición" recientemente pintada "en el lugar" en la región de Limousin del centro de Francia, que un crítico admiraba en la galería parisina Susse Frères en el verano de 1836. Su primer propietario fue Paul Périer (1812-1897), un primer partidario de Dupré, así como sus colegas Théodore Rousseau y Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps.
