Dopo aver ricevuto una macchina fotografica come regalo da sua figlia, Julia Margaret Cameron ha iniziato la sua carriera in fotografia all'età di quarantotto anni. Ha prodotto la maggior parte del suo lavoro da casa sua a Freshwater sull'isola di Wight. Molti dei suoi modelli erano membri della famiglia, (compreso il marito e il nipote), i suoi servitori domestici e residenti locali. Ha anche fotografato gli intellettuali e i leader all'interno del suo cerchio di famiglia e amici che includeva il pittore ritratto George Frederick Watts, l'astronomo Sir John Herschel, e il Poeta Laureate of England Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
