La fabbrica Meissen fece centinaia di animali a grandezza naturale in porcellana per il Palazzo giapponese dell'Elettore di Sassonia e re di Polonia Augusto II il Forte, a Dresda. Fare così grandi opere in porcellana non è stato un compito facile, e i primi tentativi hanno prodotto oggetti in una sostanza grigia che tendevano a rompere, con numerose imperfezioni. Era solo nel 1731, e in particolare con Johann Joachim Kändler, che divenne il capo modellatore nel 1733, che fu raggiunto un alto livello di qualità, con una modellazione sofisticata e uno sguardo più brillante alla porcellana.
