Un erudito barbudo propina sus codos en el costado de su barco y descansa su barbilla en sus manos, inclinándose para captar una mirada de lombrices esparcidos por la superficie de un estanque. Es reconocible como el filósofo de la dinastía Song del Norte Zhou Maoshu (Chino: Zhou Dunyi, 1017-1073). Una figura líder en el pensamiento neoconfuciano temprano, Zhou escribió, entre otros textos, el breve ensayo “Sobre el amor del loto” (“Ai lian shuo”), en el que describe el loto como un “hombre de virtud”, en contraste con el crisantemo “hermitlike” y la peonía “aristocrática”. Después de la muerte de su padre, Kaihō Yūshō (1533-1615), Yūsetsu operaba una tienda que vende imágenes listas bajo el nombre de “Chūzaemon”. Más tarde, recibió el patrocinio de Tokugawa Iemitsu, el tercer shogun, y volvió a usar el nombre familiar Kaihō.
