Uno studioso barbuto sporge i suoi gomiti sul lato della sua barca e riposa il suo mento nelle sue mani, appoggiandosi a catturare uno sguardo di lobi sparsi sulla superficie di un laghetto. È riconoscibile come il filosofo della dinastia Song settentrionale Zhou Maoshu (cinese: Zhou Dunyi, 1017-1073). Una figura di primo piano nel pensiero neo-confuciano, Zhou ha scritto, tra gli altri testi, il breve saggio “On the Love of the Lotus” (“Ai lian shuo”), in cui descrive il loto come un “uomo di virtù”, in contrasto con il crisantemo “eremiso” e la peonia “aristocratica”. Dopo la morte di suo padre, Kaihō Yūshō (1533–1615), Yūsetsu gestiva un negozio che vendeva immagini pronte sotto il nome di "Chūzaemon". Più tardi, ricevette il patrocinio di Tokugawa Iemitsu, il terzo shogun, e tornò a usare il nome di famiglia Kaihō.
