Kano Tan’yū ha studiato numeri prodigiosi di opere della storia della pittura cinese e giapponese. Il frutto del suo studio è stato un vasto corpus di libri di pattern e disegni di opere d'arte. Questo insieme di due pergamene è riempito con un assortimento di copie, studi e schizzi. La prima pergamena è iscritta a una sezione che mostra uno studio di un dipinto di Mu Qi, un cinese Chan (Zen) monaco-painter buddista della dinastia Song del Sud. La seconda pergamena è aperta a uno schizzo della figura buddista Hotei dopo un lavoro di Kano Motonobu (1476–1559).
