Karl Lorenz Rettich kam nur nach Ahrenshoop in einer reifen Phase seines Lebens. Seine Beziehung zur Ostsee war schon immer eine enge, denn er wurde von einem Ort nahe der Ostseeküste bei Lübeck in eine alte Mecklenburger Landbesitzerfamilie geboren. Im Jahre 1860 begann er in München Rechtswissenschaften zu studieren, aber im folgenden Jahr war er bereits ein Kunststudent unter Adolf Lier, der auch Carl Malchin ermutigt hatte und ihn in seinen ersten künstlerischen Bemühungen unterstützte.
