Shōki (cinese: Zhong Kui) è stato uno studioso della Cina del primo VII secolo che si è suicidato dopo essere stato tradito dal primo grado in esami di servizio civile, ma che è stato sepolto con onori dopo che l'imperatore ha sentito la storia tragica. Per mostrare la sua gratitudine, Shōki è apparso come un esorcista in un sogno di un imperatore cinese successivo e ha promesso di sedare i demoni e bandire la malattia. In Giappone, le immagini auspici di Shōki sono state mostrate per il Festival dei Ragazzi, celebrato il quinto giorno del quinto mese. Qui, l'artista Katsushika Hokusai, di età di ottantasette anni, dipinto con pigmento rosso, in quanto quel colore è stato pensato per avere l'efficacia magica in warding off smallpox.
