A Chinese story told how a carp leaptup the rapids of the Yellow River andbecame a dragon. Carp are symbols ofperseverance, as well as fertility, becauseof the many eggs they lay.Inscribed on the print are poems by threedifferent poets which refer to carp, cherryblossom, the vigour of a dragon and riversin Edo (Tokyo). The dragon representsthe fifth month of the year in the Japanesemonthly cycle of zodiac animals.
