Conceived from the appearance of a group of buildings rising in the white light of the morning mist, Kobayashi has created a story in which the whimsical city is swallowed up by an exuberance of plants and animals, crumbles, and returns to the earth. The drawing for the wood engraving prints was performed with hollow relief, and the carving is as though light was shone onto darkness. It has a white gradation, which Kobayashi created by inserting minute vertical and horizontal shavings into the convex portions so as to erase the traces of the 12 piece woodblock set, which he filled in with detailed carvings at the time of creation in 1997.
