Una figura prominente all'inizio dello Zen giapponese del XIV secolo, Shiren nacque in una famiglia aristocratica a Kyoto e studiò lo Zen a Kamakura con l'émigré monk cinese Yishan Yining (giapponese: Issan Ichinei, 1247–1317). La calligrafia di Shiren rivela un debito al suo padrone nella sua spazzolatura croccante, i tratti orizzontali lunghi e la tendenza generale verso destra. La quatraina a sette caratteri, sullo zucchero, legge: Ora lasciate fuoco e acqua combattere fuori: Riscaldare e bollire molte volte, Si formerà naturalmente;Non dire che ha sempre un sapore come il miele.
