Durante la seconda guerra mondiale l'Inghilterra offrì rifugio a migliaia di vittime politiche e razziali del regime nazista. Fleeing Germania nel 1936, Schwitters cercò rifugio in Norvegia, ma quando i nazisti invasero fuggì in Inghilterra. È stato internato per diciassette mesi come cittadino tedesco, prima a Edimburgo e poi a Hutchinson Camp a Douglas sull'Isola di Man. Questo è stato un periodo molto creativo per Schwitters, come nel primo campo si è trovato circondato da altri intellettuali e artisti, e lo scambio di idee lo ha ispirato notevolmente. Produsse dipinti astratti e figurativi, compresi i ritratti delle persone incontrate. Il soggetto di questo dipinto è stato identificato come Georg Heller da un altro internato all'apertura della mostra Schwitters al Tate nel 1985.
