La materia di Lhermitte spesso presentava contadini e vita agraria, riflettendo la sua esperienza come gioventù. Durante la sua carriera, creò composizioni luminose nella tradizione Barbizon e fu profondamente influenzato da Jean François Millet. Le sue opere rafforzarono la dignità della vita rurale in Francia alla fine del XIX secolo. L'artista ha ottenuto il successo critico al Salon ufficiale a partire dal 1860. Fu molto ammirato dai suoi coetanei e ricevette anche un invito da Edgar Degas a esporre con gli Impressionisti nel 1879, anche se non lo fece mai.
