die sehr große kirche der santa maria novella war die erste wichtige und unabhängige kirche im wirklich italienischen stil . Der bau begann in etwa 1246 für den dominikanerorden . Die genauen daten der verschiedenen teile der kirche sind immer noch umstritten, aber der bau hat sicherlich sehr lange gedauert . Das kirchenschiff wurde erst begonnen 1279 , und die fassade , begann in 1310 , war erst fertig 1470 . Dennoch , das innere und der plan machen es zur wichtigsten kirche ihrer zeit .
