In questo disegno vediamo il bue e il culo che nella leggenda ha respirato sul Cristo appena nato per tenerlo caldo; gli animali, posti in modo diverso, sono presenti nella parte destra dell'Adorazione dei Magi (Firenze, Uffizi). Circondandoli qui sono studi in punto di piombo graffiato di un cavallo o di un culo, la sua testa giù come se pascolare; in alto a sinistra il corridore piegante gira la testa per guardare verso l'alto, forse alla Stella di Betlemme. Le macchie di legname bruciato suggeriscono che il foglio era in uso nel laboratorio mentre la pittura era in corso. Melzi
