Dies ist eine Studie für die drapery des Engels in der zweiten Version der Virgin of the Rocks (jetzt in der National Gallery, London). Leonardo arrangierte wahrscheinlich Leinen in verdünntem Gips über ein kleines Modell, das, wenn trocken in der Freizeit untersucht werden konnte. Der hellblaue Boden des Papiers gibt eine Mitte-Ton, so dass Leonardo eine breite Palette von Tönen mit schwarzer Tinte und weißer Bleifarbe, aufgetragen mit einem Pinsel zu erkunden. Melzi
