Il disegno attuale rappresenta uno studio per il monumento equestre commissionato da Ludovico Sforza in onore del padre Francesco Sforza, l'ex duca di Milano. Anche se il bronzo colossale non è mai stato realizzato, un certo numero di disegni per la statua è sopravvissuto. Il foglio di Budapest è uno dei record più importanti di una serie di studi di cavalli accuratamente selezionati nelle stalle milanesi, realizzati durante il periodo del 1490-3, quando Leonardo stava lavorando più intensamente sul monumento equestre.
