Solo dopo aver fallito nella sua ricerca di una carriera governativa, Li Fangying si dedica alla pittura come mezzo di sopravvivenza. Il suo amore per la fioritura della prugna era tale che chiamò il suo studio la Plum Blossom Tower; era lì, nel 1743, che dipinse questa immagine del suo fiore preferito insieme a bambù e una roccia. Per Li e gli studiosi falliti come lui, il fiore di prugna che fiorisce nonostante il freddo invernale ha fornito un potente modello di perseveranza.
