Nato in Inghilterra, Spencer immigrato negli Stati Uniti nel 1830. Ha iniziato la sua carriera a Cincinnati, dipingendo ritratti e soggetti letterari, ma dopo essersi trasferita a New York nel 1848, ha lottato per trovare patroni per queste opere e presto ha rivolto la sua attenzione a dipingere scene di vita domestica. Lavorando in un mondo d'arte dominato da uomini, Spencer ha scavato lo spazio per se stessa concentrandosi sulle raffigurazioni di beatitudine familiare, spesso disegnando sulle proprie esperienze come moglie e madre. Ha anche usato il marito e i bambini come modelli, anche in questo lavoro, che è ambientato nel salotto ben arredato della sua famiglia.
