Konvertiert zum Christentum auf der Straße nach Damaskus, Paulus wurde als Apostel zu den Heiden bekannt. Er wird gezeigt, dass er das Schwert seines Martyriums und die biblischen Episteln hält, die er schrieb, beginnend mit dem Schwert der christlichen Gemeinschaft in Rom. Ein Künstler von großer Raffinesse, Lippo Memmi war der Schwager und gelegentliche Mitarbeiter von Simone Martini. Diese Tafel gehörte zu einem aufwendigen Altarbild, das für die Kirche San Francesco in San Gimignano, einer Hügelstadt südlich von Florenz, bemalt wurde.
