Converso al cristianismo en el camino a Damasco, Pablo se convirtió en el apóstol a los gentiles. Se le muestra sosteniendo la espada de su martirio y las epístolas bíblicas que escribió, comenzando con el uno a la comunidad cristiana en Roma. Un artista de gran refinamiento, Lippo Memmi fue el cuñado y colaborador ocasional de Simone Martini. Este panel pertenecía a un elaborado retablo pintado para la iglesia de San Francesco en San Gimignano, una localidad montañosa al sur de Florencia.
