Nel 1224 San Francesco si ritirò da Assisi alla montagna di La Verna dove cominciò a digiunare. Una mattina il suo compagno, fratello Leo, lo trovò inginocchiato in un bosco illuminato di luna in preghiera. Cigoli ha alterato significativamente questo incidente rappresentando san Francesco con gli stimmi che non ha ricevuto fino a dopo nella sua vita. Cigoli dipinse altri due dipinti molto simili di questo soggetto, entrambi monogramati.
