1224 zog der heilige Franziskus von Assisi auf den Berg La Verna zurück, wo er schnell begann. Früher fand sein Gefährte, Bruder Leo, ihn in einem mondbeleuchteten Wald im Gebet knien. Cigoli hat diesen Vorfall deutlich verändert, indem er den Heiligen Franziskus mit der Stigmata repräsentierte, die er bis später in seinem Leben nicht erhalten hatte. Cigoli malte zwei andere sehr ähnliche Gemälde dieses Themas, beide monogrammiert.
