Lorenzo Costa ha ricevuto la sua formazione a Ferrara. Prima lavorò indipendentemente a Bologna e successivamente, dal 1506 in poi, presso la corte dei Gonzaga a Mantova. In mancanza di documenti scritti, il suo soggiorno a Firenze può essere supposto solo, un'ipotesi che può ben essere sostenuta da questa stessa pittura, troppo. Analoghe raffigurazioni della dea della bellezza e dell'amore si possono trovare tra le opere di Botticelli e il suo cerchio, proprio come la filosofia neo-platonica ponendo al centro i concetti incarnati da Venere, aveva i seguaci più ardenti anche nella città dei Medici. Il quadro di Budapest è stato recentemente identificato da uno studioso italiano con il Venere dipinto da Costa, che Francesco Gonzaga, il marchese di Mantova, inviò come dono a François I, re di Francia nel 1518.
