La mujer que se inclina hacia el lado no ha sido identificada conclusivamente. Vestida en un disfraz elaborado y suavemente pintado de color verde brillante y naranja, dirige la atención a un dibujo sostenido en su mano izquierda. Esto muestra su nombre romano, Lucretia, a punto de apuñalarse después de haber sido violada por el hijo del rey Tarquin. La transparencia de la pintura revela que Lotto representaba originalmente Lucretia en color, no como un dibujo monocromo. El retrato, al mostrar la belleza de la niñera, también proclama su virtud. El mensaje está subrayado por la inscripción latina sobre el papel sobre la tabla, tomada del historiador romano Livy:
