Percy Bysshe Shelley, il poeta romantico, annegò nel 1822 quando il suo yacht fu distrutto in una tempesta nel Golfo di Spezzia, Italia. Il suo corpo fu cremato e i suoi resti poi sepolti al cimitero protestante di Roma. La pittura di Fournier mostra il piro funebre circondato da tre degli amici più vicini del poeta morto.
