Bereits 1755 gab König Friedrich II. von Preußen (1712-1786) Statua bei französischen Künstlern für seine Bildergalerie in Auftrag. Die Statue der Diana wurde von Louis-Claude Vassé (1717-1772) gefertigt. Sie war 1769 fertiggestellt, gelangte aber erst 1771 mit drei anderen Statuen in Potsdam an. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Pendant – der Statue des Apollo, geschaffen von Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne (1704-1778) – wurde sie an der Westwand der Bildergalerie aufgestellt. Hier wurde sie 1773 vom damaligen Galeriedirektor Matthias Oesterreich (1716-1778) erstmals beschrieben. Die Skulpturen sind Teil eines ikonografischen Programmi, das die gesamte Bildergalerie erfasst. Kunstausübung als Weg der Erkenntnis, die Kunstfertigkeit, der Paragone (Wettbewerb) von Malerei und Skulptur, von Antike und Gegenwart, von italienischer und niederländischer Malerei ein reiches Feld der Kunstbetrachtung, der sichen Diana scheint in ihrer Darstellung der Bewegung, in der Bildhauer die statische, feste Eigenschaft des Steins zu überwinden scheint, die antike Diana von Versailles überflügeln zu wollen.
