Louis Haghe nacque in Belgio e vi si alleò come pittore e litografia. Si trasferì a Londra nel 1832, dove gestiva una casa editrice. Fu anche membro fondatore della New Society of Painters in Water Colours nel 1832 e fu presidente dal 1873 al 1884. Questo acquerello sembra illustrare un evento fittizio che si intreccia sullo sfondo di una guerra quasi continua nei Paesi Bassi meridionali in Spagna durante il XVII secolo, quando le città fiamminghe erano spesso assediate da eserciti stranieri che combattono lo spagnolo. Quando è stato esposto per la prima volta, è stato accompagnato da un preventivo scelto da Haghe da Shakespeare
