Louis Haghe wurde in Belgien geboren und dort als Maler und Lithograph ausgebildet. Er zog 1832 nach London, wo er eine Druckerei betrieben. Er war 1832 Gründungsmitglied der New Society of Painters in Water Colours und diente als Präsident von 1873 bis 1884. Diese Aquarell scheint ein fictives Ereignis zu illustrieren, das im 17. Jahrhundert um die Kulisse der fast ständigen Kriegsführung in den spanisch-ruierten Südniederländen gewebt wurde, als flämische Städte häufig von fremden Armeen belagert wurden, die gegen die Spanier kämpfen.
