Lang si stabilì a New York nel 1845, sette anni dopo l'immigrazione a Philadelphia dalla sua Germania natale. Qui presenta un gruppo di donne in uno spazio studio non identificato, praticando industriosamente le arti della pittura, del disegno e della scultura. Appaiono tra i vari elementi essenziali per la formazione: libri di stampe, una tavolozza e vernici, sculture in gesso e frammenti architettonici, cavalletti e strumenti creativi. Alla fine degli anni 1860, le opportunità educative per aspiranti artisti di sesso femminile si erano espanse; dalle lezioni private con artisti affermati alle scuole, in particolare la Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, fondata nel 1859, e la Ladies Art Association, iniziata nel 1867.
