Die Darstellung der Liebesgöttin Venus mit dem Amorknaben geht zurück auf eine Zeichnung des französischen Malers François Boucher (1703-1770), der mit derartigen Themen großen Anklang fand und seine Werke in Nachdrucken verbreiten ließ. Der Graphiker Louis-Marin Bonnet hatte als erster eine Technik zur druckgraphischen Wiedergabe von mehrfarbigen Pastellzeichnungen entwickelt, die als Crayonmanier bezeichnet wurde. Er benutzte nacheinander bis zu acht verschieden farbige Platten und erzielte dadurch eine nuancenreiche Farbigkeit, die den Vorlagen sehr nahe kam. Auch die Struktur der Pastellkreiden ist meisterhaft wiedergeben.
