Während ihres Lebens war Vigée Le Brun die berühmteste Künstlerin Frankreichs, und sie war sich bewusst, wie wichtig ihre Selbstdarstellung in der Pariser Kunstwelt war. 1787 legte sie dem Salon der Französischen Königlichen Akademie drei Porträts ihrer Tochter Julie, einschließlich dieser, eine stillschweigende Nod der Tatsache, dass ihre Fähigkeit, um umfasst zu schaffen, aber nicht beschränkt auf Mutterschaft.
