Durante la sua vita, Vigée Le Brun era l’artista donna più famosa della Francia, ed era molto consapevole di quanto fosse importante la sua auto-presentazione nel mondo dell’arte parigina. Nel 1787 presentò al Salon della Royal Academy francese tre ritratti di sua figlia, Julie, tra cui questo, un tacito accenno al fatto che la sua capacità di creare comprendeva ma non era limitata alla maternità. Julie è mostrata sia nel profilo che direttamente attraverso l'inclusione di uno specchio. La prospettiva volutamente impossibile si traduce in una doppia immagine che si basa sulle figure allegoriche precedenti di Sight e sui dibattiti sulla realtà contro l’illusione nella pittura.
