Questo giovane autoritratto raffigura Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun all'età di circa ventisei anni dopo aver dipinto il primo dei suoi numerosi ritratti della regina Marie-Antoinette. Qui si presenta non come artista, con tavolozza e spazzole, ma come una donna affascinante e attraente della società–indistinguibile dai suoi stessi patroni, tra cui la regina e le signore aristocratiche, che a volte dipinse in abiti informali simili. In gran parte autodidatta, Vigée Le Brun fu raccomandata dalla regina per l'adesione alla Royal Academy nel 1783 e presto acquisì notevole fama e fama. Quando mostrava al Salon i suoi dipinti erano “il più lodato . . . i temi di conversazione a corte e a Parigi, in cene, in circoli letterari.
