Die Geschichte des Erzengels Michaels Sieg über Satan und die Renegaten-Engel wird in Offenbarung (12, 7-9) erzählt. Als christlicher Ritter wurde St. Michael als Symbol der katholischen Kirche angesehen, die siegreich gegenüber Protestantismus und der türkischen Bedrohung war. In Giordanos Version unterstreichen die hell leuchtende Farbe und die mächtig treibende Fieber des Engels die triumphale Natur der Szene. Das Bild war ursprünglich für einen Altar gedacht, aber es ist nicht bekannt, für welche Kirche. Es wurde um 1663 gemalt und ist Teil einer Phase in Giordanos Ausgabe, in der er von dem Bolognese Maler Guido Reni inflehte. Sein Modell war Renis Altarpaneel aus kurz vor 1636 in der Kapuziner Kirche in Rom. Giordano war auch von den Gravuren von Raphaels St. Michael (1518). Satans groteskes Gesicht basierte auf einer Radierung des neapolitanischen Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652).
