Lukas Cranach il Vecchio era un seguace politico e buon amico di Martin Lutero (1483-1545); l'artista lo ritrasse spesso, in ciondolo con altre persone come suo collaboratore Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) qui, o sua moglie nel dittico agli Uffizi. I due pannelli sono una replica di laboratorio dopo che i ritratti originali Cranach aveva dipinto verso il 1543.
