Samson dimostrò la sua forza sovrumana uccidendo un leone con le sue mani nude. Egli è raffigurato con piede nella sua schiena, afferrando le sue mascelle nelle sue mani e costringendoli a parte. La lotta con un unico avversario era un soggetto che naturalmente tendeva ad acquisire un significato simbolico. Questa istanza è stata interpretata dalla Chiesa medievale come la lotta di Cristo contro il diavolo.
