Questo è il primo dipinto conosciuto di Cranach, eseguito per la Schottenkirche a Vienna. Lo stile di Cranach fu completamente formato e subì poco sviluppo dopo circa il 1515, e i dipinti altamente finiti e prodotti in massa dopo quella data soffrono di confronto con le opere più individuali che dipinse nell'età adulta precoce. I dipinti che l'artista trentenne ha fatto a Vienna erano di un tipo profondamente devozionale ambientato nei paesaggi selvaggi delle colline alpine, con rovine e alberi spazzati dal vento. Queste immagini mostrano Cranach come artista d'avanguardia di notevole forza emotiva, e uno degli iniziatori della scuola del Danubio. Tra questi spicca la Crocifissione nel Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna.
