Intorno al 1525, Cranach (un pittore leader del Rinascimento tedesco, che si era formato in studi fiamminghi) dipinse un Venere avvolto in un velo trasparente che guardava direttamente allo spettatore, le cui raffinate linee fluenti sono lontane dallo stile delle statue antiche. La spazzola fine cattura ogni ruga nella corteccia dell'albero e ogni piuma nelle ali. Cranach ha deciso di accompagnare la sua figura nuda con un accoppiato moralizzante da parte dell'Umanista Chelidonio che ci ricorda che 'voluptas' è transitorio e accompagnato dal dolore, come il piccolo Cupido si rende conto quando assaggia il nido con le sue api pungenti. La data 1531 scritta sul dipinto non è pensato per essere originale e si ritiene che sia stato effettivamente eseguito intorno al 1525.
