Diese posthumen Porträts der sächsischen Wähler Friedrich III, der Wise und Johann I, der Konstante gehören zu einer Serie von sechzig solcher Porträtpaare, die von Johann Is Sohn und Nachfolger Johann Friedrich I, dem Magnanimous, bestellt wurden, als er 1532 zum Wähler wurde. Er beabsichtigte die Porträts seines Vaters und Onkels, als Instrumente der Propaganda zu dienen. Die begleitenden laudatorischen Gedichte betonen die Passage der sächsischen Wahlvorherrschaft von Friedrich nach Johann, was die Legitimität von Johann Friedrichs eigener Wählerschaft bedeutet. 1533 fertiggestellt, zeigt die umfangreiche Serie die Geschwindigkeit und Effizienz der Cranach Werkstatt.
