Un comandante della legione romana, Maurice fu martire nei pressi di Agaunum (oggi Svizzera) nel 280 o 300 CE per aver rifiutato di macellare i cristiani. Fu dal Nord Africa, e nel XIII secolo in Germania cominciò ad essere interpretato come Nero, influenzato dal regno del Sacro Romano Imperatore Federico II (1194-1250). I vasti territori di Friedrich comprendevano una variegata comunità di individui, e la sua corte in Sicilia comprendeva consiglieri, soldati e musicisti neri. Tuttavia, la rappresentazione di Cranach di Maurice è molto probabilmente non basata su un individuo reale, ma invece sulla statua reliquary di grandezza naturale di San Maurizio ospitato nella chiesa domenicana di Halle.
