Le célèbre mythe grec a été transposé à l'époque de l'artiste, Lucas Cranach I, qui a peint ses personnages féminins comme courtisans du 16ème siècle. Hercule est séduit par Omphale, Reine de Lydia, qui finit par l'épouser. Il est montré ici pour tourner la laine - une image d'amour absolu qui réduit Hercules à la servitude, perdant tout sens de son pouvoir.
