La scena è tratta dalla letteratura, in particolare il poema Cupid Stealing Honey del poeta greco classico Theocritus. La storia dietro il dipinto La poesia racconta la storia di come Cupido si lamenta con sua madre, Venere (la dea dell'amore), di come le api lo pungono perché ha rubato il loro alveare. Si chiede che le creature così piccole possano infliggere così tanto dolore. Venere ride e gli dice che le loro punture possono essere paragonate alle ferite che lui stesso infligge su tutti quelli colpiti dalle sue frecce. La breve estasi dell'amore può presto essere sostituita dalla sofferenza e dal focolaio. Un segno nell’angolo in alto a sinistra si riferisce alla poesia di Theocritus. La pittura
